I occasionally use AI tools for assistance in my work; most often to scan, structure or synthesise large quantities of information. I don’t use it to create written content from scratch; when I do use it creatively, it tends to be for visualisation e.g. creating a map or graph from research data, or re-structuring notes. I remain dedicated to conducting thorough research, and creating my own written work, given how central our humanity is to ethical communication and the production of rigorous journalism.

We are right to be concerned about the proliferation of AI, in particular its governance. While I recognise there is no ‘putting the genie back in the bottle’, I also recognise the legitimate risks and ethical quandaries playing out in real time.

I wrote this statement as part of a module on ethical AI use, as part of my Certificate in Ethical Journalism and Media from Impress and the University of Huddersfield. As the field continues to develop, I will continue to learn.}
